New Zealand Banks, Information for personal & commercial NZ banking

Moving bank today is a relatively easy thing to do, but knowing what is available to you and making the right choice is far more difficult.

Did you know that there are 19 different banks that trade in New Zealand? All banks operating in NZ must register with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) and are required by law to disclose their financial condition each quarter.

All New Zealand banks are guaranteed by the government which came into force through the global credit crisis of 2008/9. There are a number of NZ owned institutions, Australian owned banks, and building societies that trade in New Zealand.

Banks marked (B) operate in New Zealand as branches of overseas incorporated banks. All other banks are incorporated in New Zealand. Click on each link to see contact details and important information relating to that Bank.

Who is the Reserve Bank of New Zealand? (RBNZ)

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand is New Zealand's central bank and the RBNZ controls the base rate of interest for New Zealand. Established in 1934 and although not a government department it has been wholly owned by the government of New Zealand since 1936 and like most central banks, the Reserve Bank is primarily a policy organisation with three main functions:

  • operating monetary policy to maintain price stability;
  • promoting the maintenance of a sound and efficient financial system; and
  • meeting the currency needs of the public.
